Tomodachi Karate
Tomodachi (友達; ともだち; or トモダチ?) is a Japanese word meaning "friend(s)".
Tomodachi Karate Centre was established in November 2011 by a group of friends namely, Grant Weston, John Oosthuizen, Garth Ibbetson and Bill Brits who shared a common desire for an in-depth, intensive study of Karate. In January 2012 the Tomodachi approached Daniel Gombe (6th Dan) and asked if he would join the group as the head of the Tomodachi Dojo. Daniel Gombe trains with the famous Early Birds at the Honbu Dojo in Illovo, Johannesburg as well as at the Roodepoort Karate Centre under the expert tutelage of Sensei Johan Roets (8th Dan).
Join and Develop The Whole You
Tomodachi Karate Academy is housed at the Hajime Judo Academy at 15 Poplar Street, Bryanston Ext 3, Ferndale. When you join, you gain access to many benefits of membership. Primarily, of course, you get continual guidance from highly-skilled and certified instructors, experienced evaluation for Dan and Kyu rank promotions, the right to participate in local and international JKA karate tournaments, and dozens of other practical advantages.
But the best reason to join is for karate itself.
Karate is not an easy art. But it is an art. And like any art the more you put into it, the more it will repay you. Karate enriches you physically, mentally and spiritually—developing your body, your mind and your character. Especially at the JKA.
Why?
Because the JKA is The Keeper of Karate’s Highest Tradition. Our karate is the strongest and most traditional karate there is. We see it not as a sport, but as a whole way of life. And that is always our emphasis: the whole. The goal is to help you develop every aspect of who you are

Dojo Kun (Five Maxims of Karate)
Senior instructors at the JKA developed the Five Dojo Kun, which everyone studying at the JKA commits to memory. By repeating aloud after training, the process reminds students of the right attitude, frame of mind and virtues to strive for both within the dojo, and outside.
1. Jinkaku kansei ni tsutomuru koto (Seek perfection of character)
2. Makoto no michi o mamoru koto (Be sincere)
3. Doryoku no seishin o yashinau koto (Put maximum effort into everything you do)
4. Reigi o omonzuru koto (Respect others)
5. Kekki no yuu o imashimuru koto (Develop self-control)
